2024 UMAGAZINE 29 • 澳大新語 57 This year marks the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland, and the integrated development of Macao and Hengqin has also opened a new chapter, expanding opportunities for UM. At this historic juncture, UM is capitalising on opportunities to establish a new campus and research institutes in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin. These initiatives aim to expand the university’s educational offerings, create new spaces for teaching and research, cultivate talent, and accelerate the transfer of UM’s research and innovation results. Launching Four Faculties in the Cooperation Zone in Hengqin The Overall Development Plan for the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin states clearly that higher education institutions in Macao and world-renowned universities are encouraged to launch initiatives in the Cooperation Zone to advance education in fields such as microelectronics, medicine, and finance. According to the development plan, when mainland Chinese students complete programmes in these fields in the Cooperation Zone, their results will be recognised as equivalent to degrees in Macao. With the support of the central government and the Macao SAR Government, UM is planning to construct a new campus in the Cooperation Zone. UM Rector Prof Yonghua Song says, ‘UM will continue to align with Macao’s needs to develop diverse industries. The university will also promote technological innovation, industry-academia collaboration, and science and technology talent development in the Greater Bay Area, so as to facilitate Macao’s integration into national development.’ The new campus in the Cooperation Zone will support Macao’s ‘1+4’ development strategy and leverage the university’s characteristics and research strengths to enhance its educational offerings. Specifically, UM plans to establish four faculties on the new campus: 1) Faculty of Medicine, which will focus on cultivating medical professionals in fields such as clinical medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and nutrition; 2) Faculty of Design, which will offer programmes in creative design, architecture and urban design, and intelligent manufacturing and system design; 3) Faculty of Information Science and Technology, which will offer programmes in artificial intelligence and digital technology, microelectronics and electrical UM’S DECADE OF ACHIEVEMENTS ON HENGQIN ISLAND • 遷校十年 揚帆千里
